Sculptor

Growing up in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, Simon was obsessed by play dough and Lego blocks, so it wasn’t too long before he began experimenting with clay and stone, creating abstract torsos and primitive style heads.

Although sculpting was Simon’s passion, he took work in factories to pay the bills and free time was spent grinding, chipping and chiselling a name for himself.

In 2000, Simon’s creative frustration was at its peak and he decided to work part-time, buy a chainsaw and start producing more pieces, including very large wooden sculptures.

From 2003, Simon created even larger and more abstract sculptures, with some pieces being over 10 feet high and weighing two tons.

Simon’s recent work, ‘The Playground of Life’, which is a series of expressive, life-size figurative pieces, has been exhibited inside galleries, gardens, courtyards, the ruins of castles and old steel works.

As Simon’s collection continues to grow, so does his passion for working with young people and over the years the sculptor has organised and run over 50 workshops.

Simon said,

“My work is stimulated by lots of things, from primitive art to everyday emotional and visual experience.”

“I work with all age ranges, from infants to sixth form students and from special needs pupils to the elderly.”

“Students can make a variety of art pieces, such as small individual sculptures or carvings, using clay, wood, soft-carving blocks or wire.”
