A recent Creative Partnerships BDR event at Sheffield Hallam’s Hubs, designed and managed by Sero, offered young people a real glimpse into the creative industries.
On July 15th, students from Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield attended ‘Creative Works’ to interact with digital artists, jugglers, actors, musicians, graphic designers, artists and sculptors.
The event included live exhibitions and hands-on displays by successful practitioners working in all sectors of the creative industry across South Yorkshire.
The students also had the opportunity to put questions to a panel of high-profile creative producers, including music producer, Trevor Gossett, cartoonist, Pete McKee and ‘Living Statue’, Michael Hoy.
Also on hand to advise the 14 to 19 year-olds were representatives from Hype Dance Company, Greentop Circus and Sheffield Theatres, film maker, Paul Oxborough and Interior Designer, Mel Huckway.
Painter and printmaker, Lyn Hodnett, won British Airways Young Achievers' in Art Award, resulting in a commission to create ‘Maiden Flight’, a 5ftx8ft painting for Heathrow Airport. Her best advice to aspiring artists is,
“Get a specialism, a selling point and a specific skill that sets you apart from other artists – and be sure to get loads of work experience!”
Sheffield born and bred artist, Pete McKee’s work recently rocketed in popularity after he was commissioned by legendary musician Noel Gallagher to create a special piece. Pete said,
“When you first start out as an artist you need to to identify your goals. Also, don’t be afraid to exhibit in less obvious places, like cafes and pubs. You never know whose eye your work might catch.”
As well as creating custom t-shirts with a professional spray can artist, student’s tried their hand at music production, dancing and acting at this inspiring and vibrant event, designed to provide information about training, education opportunities and the kind of jobs that are out there.
